Pom-Pom Passion

I embellished my last Silhouette project with handmade pom-poms and decided that I love them so much, I'd write a special post all about the glories of the humble pom-pom!

Who doesn't love thhem I ask?  As a kid, I spent possibly years of my life patiently threading wool though a cardboard doughnut shape made out of cereal boxes.  Pom-pom cats, pom-pom snowmen, you name it, I pom-pomed it!

Super Speedy Tools

Now, as fun and theraputic as all this wool threading is, I was super excited when I first saw the pom-pom makers on a Kirstie Allsopp craft telly show.  The 'official' ones are made by Clover and are available in John Lewis, Hobbycraft etc.  I decided to chance a £1 version from Ebay and it works great.

They are effectively the same as the doughnut version, but with two separate arms that pivot.  This means that that the wool can be wrapped quickly rather than threading though a hole each time and can also be wound straight from the ball of wool.  Once cut and secured, the sides clip off and you're ready for your next one!

dinky fork method

This method is super easy and requires no specialised tools, just a regular fork.  The only negative of this method I find, is that there is alot of trimming to make a sphere.

Pom-Pom Trim

If making pom-poms isn't your thing, trim can be bought fro tiny-weeny to jumbo.  I ordered some trim online for a blind, but one was way to big and the other was way to small!  I'm so glad for the party hat project as I was able to put both to good use.

I plan to make a pom-pom Christmas wreath, but I'm sure that I'll find a reason to make some before then...!
